MERIDIAN, Miss. — Lauderdale County residents will have an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming hunting season while supporting local businesses during Mississippi’s annual Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28, through Sunday, Aug. 30.
During the three-day holiday, sales tax will not apply to eligible firearms, ammunition and certain hunting supplies, as outlined by the Mississippi Department of Revenue. The 2026 holiday has been officially scheduled for Aug. 28-30.
The tax exemption includes eligible items such as ammunition, firearms, bows, crossbows and certain firearm and archery accessories. General hunting supplies, including game calls, apparel, scent elimination products, attractants and decoys, are not eligible for the exemption.
Unlike Mississippi’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday does not place a per-item price cap on eligible purchases.
The exemption applies to qualifying purchases made in person, by mail, by telephone or online, provided the item is purchased and paid for during the holiday period. Eligible items may still qualify even if delivery occurs after the sales tax holiday has ended.
Lauderdale County is home to several businesses serving hunters, sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts. Residents are encouraged to consider shopping locally during the holiday at businesses such as Garrett’s Sports Center, Rock House Gun & Pawn and Queen City Archery.
Residents are encouraged to check with individual retailers regarding their available inventory, store hours and items qualifying for the sales tax exemption.
