Grand Jury recommends jail repairs, Justice Court information

A Lauderdale County Grand Jury is recommending repairs to the county Detention Center and additional documentation to help plaintiffs understand their responsibilities in Justice Court.

In a Grand Jury Report filed Tuesday, the June grand jury said it examined 12 witnesses and issued indictments in 95 cases over a two-day period. Indictments were not issued in an additional six cases.

As part of its duties, the Grand Jury toured the Lauderdale County Detention Center and made several recommendations to address maintenance issues including fixing an electromagnetic door lock and fixing a broken plastic holder for files.

The Grand Jury also had an opportunity to meet with Justice Court Judge Paul Earley and Court Clerk Nikita Wilkins and learn more about the court’s process.

In its report, the jury recommends the court include documentation letting plaintiffs know about their responsibilities following up on the status of the case and other literature informing the public about investigative assistance available to help identify defendants.
