Discover a Fascinating Old World
While many know of Mississippi's rich history, they do not know exactly where to go when looking for specific information such as family, or community histories, except for Public Libraries. Another excellent option is the Archives in Jackson, or the first county Archives Department organized in the state of Mississippi, the Lauderdale County Department of Archives and History.
The Lauderdale County Department of Archives and History is a part of the county government that is charged with managing county records such as court cases and other various documents. Much of the work done within the department is performed by volunteers who have an ongoing interest of the preservation of our local past. They research local community and church histories as well as their own families and donate their research to the Archives. This information is then published and placed in the Archives "bookstore" for sale. Other tasks that the volunteers have tackled include indexing marriage, census, probate court , land and other various records from microfilm so that others can have easy access to the information in book format. Many of these documents are essential in genealogy research.
Our collection of publications do not include Lauderdale County alone. Many of our publications include information of surrounding Mississippi counties, as well as neighboring Alabama counties, and other Southern States. One such book is Major David Gavin's Horseback Ride in 1843 he rode from South Carolina to Mississippi and back, this is a personal account of his journey. For those interested in the Civil War we have a journal during that time period Civil War Diary of James Palmer.
Thanks to Raymond Watkins, we have begun to compile numerous volumes of Civil War soldiers in a series entitled Confederate Deaths & Burials. Mr. Watkins has spent well over a decade researching these items in the National Archives in Washington D.C. and we have over 40 volumes of this series in print and we are continuing that undertaking, so that it will be easier for many to research the families that were involved in the Civil War.
All publication is done in house so that we can maintain a lower cost to the public. Incorporated as a nonprofit organization, the Lauderdale County Department of Archives and History welcomes researchers, volunteers, and new members . Members receive a quarterly newsletter as well as a new publication listing with that newsletter. The membership dues and donations received are used in acquiring supplies and equipment that will better organize the massive records that the department handles as well as and publish the books written by researchers and volunteers.
